When Shelley was asked on her pageant Application about pageant here is her answer in her own words: (Question) Where, in your opinion, does plus pageantry belong in society today and why? (Shelley's Answer) Plus size pageantry is important in today’s society because it allows the world to redefine beauty. Society tends to have us believe that being thin is the only way to be. This pageant breaks us away from those thoughts and allows us to embrace a new idea of beauty. The photo shopped size zero idea of woman can slowly make room for all woman to embrace their bold and beautiful curves.
Name of Platform: Just As I Am! Here is a Clear definition of Shelley's platform: In today’s society, we are conditioned to believe that if you are slim then you are beautiful and if you are not then something is wrong with you. As a woman, I believe it is time for us to be who God has created us to be. If at any moment we have altered his image, let it be for self and not because you have heard, felt or saw that you don’t fit in. Whether you are a size 2 or 22, you should rock and embrace it. Do not let a number define who you are! We, as woman, have come way too far to go backwards and not forward towards things that really matter. We have fought for jobs, education, and equality and overall we have won. Let’s not break down what was built because of the standards that society has instilled in people. We must follow our dreams and not be afraid to break the pattern. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.
Overall, I believe that woman should be who they want to be, and not what they see. Society does not define you! What, if any, are your most significant accomplishments to date regarding your platform issue? My most significant accomplishment thus far, is that I have mentored over 50 girls on how to value their worth, work on self-esteem and carry themselves as young ladies. What, specifically, do you wish to accomplish during your year of service as an activist for your platform issue? During this year, I would like to travel and reach out to a variety of woman organizations in Florida to clear common misconceptions about being plus size. As a result, I would like to see more woman embrace the person that they are this in turn will reduce self-esteem issues and raise self confidence. Someone’s size should not hinder then but instead it should shape them into the person that they are. It is commonly thought that being plus size means, that you are lazy, you over eat, or you are unhealthy. Being thin does not equal healthy and nor does plus size mean unhealthy. All women should be proud of the skin that they are in, be fashionable, be classy and still be vibrant.
